Beautiful, clear, full of sparkle and the quickest way to the heart of your beloved. Or so DeBeers (once the largest diamond company in the world) used to tell us all. Diamonds have a long and complicated history which involved colonialism, conflict, exploitation, syndicates, crime, royalty, market manipulation and intrigue. This is all after the diamond was formed, as all naturally found diamonds are millions upon millions of years old, submitted to immense pressures, temperatures and time. All to create a beautiful piece of luxury that will last forever as, “a diamond is forever”*. DeBeers played a huge part in bringing diamonds from the aristocracy and the super wealthy to the middles classes, so much so, that they even determined how much you should spend! The infamous line was. “how else could two months’ salary last forever?*” I mean, the cheek of it! No matter my thoughts on the topic and the controversy that has surrounded and that can still sometimes surround natural diamonds, there is one thing that cannot be denied. They are BEAUTIFUL. So we understand the demand and desire to have them. As covered in previous articles we shared how to assess diamonds and what characteristics make a desirable stone or to at least allow it to shine its’ brightest. Today we will have a look at an alternative, and no, not the one that you find in costume jewellery the infamous Cubic Zirconia (ZrO2). Lab-grown diamonds are a genuine alternative to natural diamonds, chemically identical to natural diamonds, the only real difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds, is exactly that. One is grown and the other is found. In order to grow a diamond you have to start with a ‘seed’, which normally constitutes a tiny diamond, be it natural or lab-grown, which is then sliced into tiny slithers and these slithers are exposed to extreme heat and pressure in a plasma reactor. It can get as hot as the Sun in one of these reactors! In a matter of weeks rather than millions and millions of years, a rough diamond is formed and looks like a dirty, rough crystal. Much like what natural diamonds look like when found in mines and riverbanks. These rough stones are then treated identically to the natural diamonds, in that they are cut and polished in exactly the same way. The end result is just as stunning and in most cases, even more stunning than the natural product. Remember one of the 4Cs for diamond classification is Clarity, well, lab-grown diamonds are almost always IF (internally flawless or flawless) grade. In other words the clearest they can be. With this in mind and the price point at which these lab-grown diamonds are available at, it is far more accessible and actually better value than their naturally found counterparts. The Future of Diamonds It really is an alternative to the naturally found diamonds and it is reflected in the market, just a decade ago around 10% of consumers were aware that lab-grown diamonds were an alternative, now, today over 50% of consumers are aware of lab-grown alternatives. Even large jewellery manufacturers are swapping out natural diamonds for lab-grown diamonds, one such example is Pandora. This in part will have something to do with the cost of these lab-grown diamonds as well as their transparent supply chain in comparison to naturally found diamonds. Next time you fancy a sparkly diamond set or encrusted treat, take a look at both sides and see what takes your fancy. In all forms, diamonds are beautiful stones and as such choice is always a good thing! We have a lovely selection of lab-grown diamonds in the boutique that will definitely give you and/or your loved one the wow-factor.

For thousands of years, the aristocracy and royalty have utilised emblems and crests as a way to signify office, standing and importance. There is no better example than the Royal Coat of Arms, which adorns any establishment or manufacturer awarded a Royal Warrant. These crests and iconography were, at their absolute pinnacle, official stamps of royalty and heads of state. In the Middle Ages in England, it was decreed that all Royal Documents were to be signed with the Royal Signet Ring. Customarily signet ring are worn on the pinky finger of gentlemen but we have seen them worn on all fingers of both ladies and gentlemen. There seems to be a real resurgence in signet rings within the well-heeled circles of sartorial excellence. They are commonly spotted now if one were to take a stroll down Jermyn Street and across on to Saville Row. If you or your family have a family crest, the signet ring is the ideal place to keep it. You could, if you were so inclined, have it reversed in relief so that it could still be used as a wax seal, as they were originally designed for. Or if you do not feel the need to cling on to the customs of old then opt for the heraldic design to be the ‘correct’ way round. Heraldic family crests are essentially heirlooms and are passed from generation to generation, how better to signify the coming of age for the next generation. Otherwise, if like myself, you do not have a coat of arms, then perhaps a simple monogram with your initials in lovely italic script would suffice. Possibly to match the monogram that you have embroidered on your shirt, and tacked delightfully on the sole of your bespoke shoes. There is another choice, and that is to have a simple plain signet ring, or one adorned with a semi-precious stone such as onyx or tiger’s eye, and just worn as a gentleman’s accessory. Whichever way you choose to have yours, it will be a classy addition to your jewellery repertoire. Here at Beau Gems we specialise in the design of bespoke jewellery and signet rings are right up our street! The design and dimensions of a signet ring really allow for a larger than normal canvas for the design to be housed. We will guide you through the entire process from initial consultation through to final mock-up and delivery. Get in touch and our team of experienced jewellers with nearly half a century of experience will be able to assist you in your design journey which could last generations.

You are an individual, no-one else is the same as you, even if you are a twin! In that respect you are treated by, loved by people in their own way. It is unique. Most jewellery amongst many other consumer products these days are mass produced, just look at the sheer number of iPhones in this world. Sometimes a little something that really resonates with you, or means more to you than anyone else, makes it and you, special. Bespoke anything is not just about the end product it is about the experience of the journey. Being able to bring something to fruition that may not have been your expertise but will reflect everything that you have put into it is a rare occurrence indeed. Here at Beau Gems we offer a Bespoke Jewellery Design Service that allows you to realise your dream piece of jewellery. Have you ever seen that gorgeous ring in the window of a boutique and wondered if only the stone was a bit bigger or the colour of the stone was different? Or a necklace that you think would have looked even better if something was tweaked. All of these possibilities and many others can be made for you, just the way you like it. This can only be done with extensive jewellery knowledge, precious metal knowledge and also visualisation skills. It is one thing having an idea and a completely different thing being able to bring it to life! Like most things these days technology is a major pillar in the process but it always works best when in tandem with the traditional techniques and knowledge garnered from years of experience. The process is very simple, there will be an initial face-to-face (where possible or electronically as is the case in times of Covid-19), where we would discuss your ideas and requirements. It is a good idea to bring to this meeting things that may be inspiring your piece such as pictures, screenshots. I must add that it does not have to be a complete piece that is your inspiration, you can always bring pictures of component parts, for example: an emerald cut diamond, a type of setting and the metal you would like it in. Budget is something that you should have an idea of as it will help us set your expectations. We will of course do our best and be competitive but we will not promise something that is impossible to deliver. Overall design can be done manually on paper or done by computer aided design or CAD/CAM software. Materials are decided upon here, which metals, which stones, what clarity, carat, colour and cut are all decided. When you are happy with the final design that is when the possibility of a 3D printed wax model is produced, to give you a real world representation of the final product in terms of design and dimensions. All this before you sign off the final design and it is then passed on to final manufacturing. Something that is truly yours, or truly theirs (if its a gift) starts with an idea, an inspiration. Make it become reality, come and speak with one of our Jewellery Specialists in-store or call us on 0207 929 7060.

Diamonds have been synonymous with luxury for centuries. The sparkle, elegance, and prestige they bring have no match. However, traditional diamonds typically come with a hefty price tag, making them accessible to only those who can afford them. But what if there was an alternative that is equally beautiful, but more affordable? Enter laboratory-grown diamonds. In this blog, we'll explore the world of laboratory-grown diamonds and why they are the future of jewellery. What are Laboratory Grown Diamonds? Laboratory-grown diamonds are exactly what the name suggests - they are diamonds that are grown in a laboratory, under controlled conditions. This process is also known as "synthetic" or "cultured" diamonds. The growth process involves replicating the natural environment that diamonds are formed in, with high pressure and temperature. The result is a diamond that is chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. The only difference is the origin. Environmental and Social Benefits The process of mining natural diamonds involves a lot of environmental degradation, such as erosion, land loss, water pollution, and carbon emissions. On the other hand, laboratory-grown diamonds have a smaller environmental footprint, as they do not require mining. Additionally, traditional diamond mining has been associated with unethical labor practices, including child labor, worker exploitation, and human rights abuses. Laboratory-grown diamonds, being ethically produced, are a more responsible choice for conscious consumers who care about the social impacts of their purchases. Quality and Cost Laboratory-grown diamonds offer significant quality benefits over their natural counterparts. Since the growth process is controlled, the result is a diamond that is more consistent in terms of color, clarity, and shape. Additionally, laboratory-grown diamonds are usually sans the inclusions that are found in natural diamonds, making them more visually stunning. In terms of cost, laboratory-grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than natural diamonds. While natural diamonds are priced based on supply and demand, laboratory-grown diamonds have a consistent, more affordable price point that is not subject to fluctuations. Recognition and Acceptance Concerns of laboratory-grown diamonds till recent times have been focused on them being seen as inferior to natural diamonds. This is not a case to worry anymore. The fact that laboratory-grown diamonds share identical properties to natural diamonds guarantees their top quality. Today, laboratory-grown diamonds are widely accepted and recognised in the jewellery industry, and they boast the same certifications, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI), proving their authenticity and quality. Conclusion: In conclusion, laboratory-grown diamonds offer a responsible, affordable, and high-quality alternative to natural diamonds. Whether you're concerned about the environment, social justice, or looking for a stunning, affordable option, laboratory-grown diamonds are worth considering. As the popularity of laboratory-grown diamonds continues to grow, they are set to lead the future of jewellery. So why not choose a laboratory-grown diamond for your next purchase? Not only will you own a beautiful and unique piece of jewellery but also make a conscientious choice to protect the planet we all share.

Caring for Pearls: A Guide Pearls are a classic and timeless piece of jewellery. They add an elegance and sophistication that can be hard to find with other gemstones. To ensure the longevity of your pearls, it is important to take proper care of them. Here we will discuss the basics of pearl care and what you need to know in order to keep your pearls looking their best. Storage Pearls should always be stored separately from other jewellery or metals that could scratch the surface of the pearl. The best way to store them is in a soft-lined jewellery box or pouch away from direct sunlight, heat, or humidity. Do not store them in anything air-tight as this can make them brittle over time. Cleaning Cleaning your pearls regularly is important because they can build up compounds over time that can damage the nacre on the pearl’s surface, dulling its luster. A soft cloth is all you need to clean off any dirt or grime that has accumulated on your pearls. Avoid using harsh chemicals such as perfumes and hairspray when wearing your pearls, as these can also damage their surface. It’s best to wait at least 30 minutes after applying any cosmetics before putting on a pearl necklace. Re-Stringing If you wear your pearl necklace often, it’s recommended that they be re-strung every 12 months to prevent breakage due to wear and tear. This will also help keep them from stretching or losing their original shape over time due to use and handling. It’s best to have a professional jeweller do this for you so that you don’t risk damaging any of the individual pearls in the process. Conclusion: Taking care of your pearls requires some extra attention but it is worth it for long-term beauty and durability! With regular cleaning and occasional re-stringing, you can enjoy your pearls for many years to come! Remember that proper storage is key - always store them away from other metals or jewels that could potentially scratch their delicate surfaces - as well as avoiding harsh chemicals when wearing them so they stay looking beautiful!
